in the immediate metro, sorry. just some wet flakes mixed in. today nothing like that. a nice looking day. got plenty of sunshine expected. our day planner, it's 33 now. watch out for some slick spots maybe a driveway or sidewalk, be careful early. but low 40s by noon and a little breezy early but notice the skies clearing this morning. so you got a good looking moon and the western sky. going to set in a little while. upper 20s though in frederick, leesburg gaithersburg to 24 in hagerstown. so again that's where we're concerned. even manassas and la plata are below freezing, fauquier and stafford counties as well which could be a little icy. feeling like 17 in hagerstown. it's 6:00 a.m. monika samtani is ready to tell you about the big problem off to the east of us. yes, that's right. on the inbounds side of route 50, here's what it's been looking like for a good 20 minutes or so. right before the beltway on the john hanson highway. emergency crews on the scene.

tow trucks been there for a while with traffic getting to the right and left but you've got delays for over the mile on the inbound side of route 50. just zooming out right now to show you the delay on the inbound side of route 50. basically from mitchellville heading for the beltway with the accident. i'll show you the map and if you're heading inbound again just know that right before you get to the beltway. you can exit to 495 but it's going to take awhile to get there. to the south side of town, coming up from alreadyington, newington and springfield. the initial delays begin in lorton up to newington and here in springfield traffic still moving pretty well to the beltway. coming up in my next report, i'll once again go to route 50 at 6:12. thank you monika. we start with just a horrible accident. a paramedic who was responding to an emergency slips and then falls off a highway bridge and now he's in the hospital. >> it happened last night along

395 near shellington. the paramedic fell into four mile run. he's now at washington hospital center and that's where delia goncalves is live this morning. delia? >> reporter: andrea, very difficult story indeed this paramedic was rushed here to the hospital in critical condition last night. and we're told his condition has in the changed this morning. he is -- not changed this morning. he is still recovering this morning here at the hospital with very serious injuries. this is a picture of 33-year- old joshua weissman of bristow, he's a seven year veteran of the department and we're told he was in cardiac arrest when he was pulled from that creek. at four mile run. weissman got out of his car to respond to that burning vehicle on the other side of the highway when he somehow slipped through a gap in-between the two spans of the overpass. he fell 20 feet into that creek. very rocky creek below. >> medic units are dispatched with engine companies on autofires to provide medicalsy

sis stance, they were respond -- assistance. they were responding as part of that initial response. they came up on the autofire first. the other person responded and at that point we dispatched additional resources to deal with that issue as well. >> reporter: it's unclear if weissman who has been on the department for seven years now was familiar with that span of 395 and that particular gap in- between the two spans, but we can tell you of course it was dark when the accident happened and of course he was rushing to a scene to rescue someone from that burning vehicle. now coming up in half hour, we'll give you a better idea of how that road is laid out. how the two spans are laid out. and how that gap is in-between so maybe, it can help answer some of the questions that still exist this morning. how this terrible accident could have happened. that part of the story in a half hour. mike? >> delia goncalves live outside washington hospital center this morning. now on to prince george's county where police are

investigating a murder inriver dale park. the victim was found near sheridan street near 61st place. they found a plan shot inside a home. he was taken to the hospital where he died. witnesses tell police the man was sitting on the front steps of the home when two men with masks approached him. at least one of the men shot the victim. his name has not been released. the sigh of relief this morning for participants after coach -- parents at ketcham elementary in the district. police arrested a man who was wanted on charges of sexually assaulting a little girl inside the school. in custody now, 21-year-old davon rashad wood of southeast. he somehow into the elementary school during the school hours last week and then assaulted a student. wood's is now charged with second degree child sex abuse. now to a story you saw first right here only channel 9. the 22-year-old convicted drunk driving crash which killed three people in olney

and the person who was convicted wants to appeal his sentence. kevin coffay says spending the next 20 years in prison is exesive. in his letter -- excessive, in his letter he writes quote -- at 6:0 a check on the presidential campaign and an event in washington is here in the spot light. the conservative political action conference begins today at the marriott wardman park. also speaking virginia attorney attorney ken cuccinelli. the presidential hopefuls are crisscrossing the nation in the wake of tuesday's contests. santorum won the votes in minnesota, missouri and colorado. ling and he's trying to -- and he's trying to point himself as the conservative alternative to

job saving. workers stashed money in their 401k retirement accounts faster last year. unfortunately though investors' performance and fees, that meant that investors really didn't get all that far ahead. the fidelity investments says year end balances averaged about $69,000. it's green, it's minty and now it's available across the country. we're talking about the shamrock shake over at mcdonald's. for the first time, the green milkshake will be available at all of the company's 14,000 u.s. restaurants. the mint flavored shake comes out once a year around st. patrick's day but since it launched in 1970, only some restaurants carries it. it will be available until march 25th. not a big mint person but i will say when i was pregnant with sophia, i had the vanilla milkshake practically every day because it was one of the only things that didn't get me sick. >> i'm all about this.

we are back at 6:11 with a look at what's making news this thursday morning. today the pentagon will announce women will be allowed to fill more roles in the military. the associated press reports women will be allowed to serve at the be aal knowledge level but still be kept from the infantry and special operations forces.

washington is the first state on the west coast to legalize same sex marriage. lawmakers approved it last night and the governor will sign the bill into law next week. montgomery county wants to raise the speed limit on the inner county connector. it's 55 right now. county lawmakers are hoping it can be raised to 65. the final decision rests with the maryland transportation authority. here's monika with an update on traffic. >> and we're going to take a live look from sky 9 to start things off. the accident on the westbound side of route 50. the john hanson highway. it's right near route 704 as you approach the beltway. a good 30 to 40 minutes now dealing with the accident with one lane to the right and left squeezing by. delays for over a mile. solid to the accident. let's also go to virginia. another major accident. this one's on the northbound side of i-95. just before route 7100. two right lanes are blocked and delays solid from lorton trying

track a suspects all the way back to the keyboard where it started. he used a tool called wire shark. it traces online conversations. >> before had no clue this might be something that i like doing. this digital forensics, but after the conversation, it's been fun -- competition, it's been fun. >> not only can team alpha phs win the high school division, they came in 36th out of more than 1100 teams which included graduate students and professional programmers. a reward for their hard work taking classes at a conference in atlanta. right next to fbi, nsa and law enforcement agents from around the country. and teacher jack stanesbury says the experts had a message for them. >> if you really do well in college at this kind of work, computer science, you can start at $120,000 a year. yeah, starting salary. that's what they said. >> i was actually hoping to get

howard bernstein with you. that's ray than national with temperature of -- reagan national with temperature of 33. a lot of areas are hovering below freezing but we'll get rid of the cold in a few hours as the sun is going to shine brightly for you on this thursday. looking at the day planner expecting temperatures to go into the low 40s by noon and highs to the mid- and upper 40s with a drive home temp of 45 degrees but really take it easy because as skies clear behind yesterday's rain and snow system, that's allowed these temperatures in many areas especially north and west to drop below freezing and even la plata at 31. you can have pockets of slick spots there as well as in prince george's county. fredericksburg, culpeper 32. so all the areas got to watch out for the slick spots and there's a little breeze this morning. got the windchills as low as 17 in gaithersburg. i'll be back in about 13 minutes talking about the weekend in a couple more snow chances, right now inside to monika with your timesaver traffic. well, unfortunately i'm the bearer of bad news for two

major thoroughfares this morning. i'm sorry. on the inbound side of route 50, the john hanson highway, apparently there were three separate accidents near the beltway. they've all been cleared but you can see all this red? that shows you you've got slow traffic on the inbound side of route 50 at least at 22 american so expect that early slow delay on the inbound side of route 50. in fact i think i have a live look as well and again this is approaching the beltway and you can see the activity. everything's been moved to the shoulder with lanes open. back to the maps this time northbound on i-95 in newington. this accident's been cleared but look at this delay on the northbound side of 95 going at 19 coming up from gordon boulevard with the lanes open. we were hoping for a sky 9 shot. i'm not sure if we have that -- yes, we do. on the northbound side of 95. this is what you should expect trying to get into newington. the only good news is that the lanes are open. coming up in my next report, an update on the situation once

again at 6:43. andrea and mike? thank you monika. an alexandria, virginia par med sick in the hospital this morning. he fell 20 feet off the highway bridge last night while responding to an emergency. >> a freak accident happened along 395 in arlington right where it goes over four mile run. delia goncalves is live in northwest washington where the paramedic is in the hospital fighting for his life. delia, good morning. >> reporter: he absolutely is. mike you know that paramedic was rushed here to washington medical center hospital center i should say last night in critical season. and unfortunately -- critical condition. and unfortunately the condition has not changed this morning. he is 33-year-old joshua weissman of bristow. he's a seven year veteran of the department. weissman was among the first on the scene of a car fire around 6:30 p.m. yesterday. when he pulled his vehicle over on the northbound lanes of 395, he got out of the car to cross over to the highway to reach that burning vehicle.

in the southbound lanes. that's when he somehow fell in a gap in-between the guardrails separating the two spans of the bridge. >> they were all rushing trying to help their buddies out you know. i feel sorry for his girlfriend or his wife. she came down there and i said a little prayer for her and i hope he gets better. >> i started crying and i got down and i started praying right but that man that worked -- got to me, that man that worked on it you know what i'm saying? it was like 20 minutes and would not stop. he wouldn't give up. >> my first reaction was like how do you fall over? i still don't know how he fell over. >> reporter: that's still the question on many peoples' minds at this early morning into the investigation, how did he fall over? we do know though reportedly he was in cardiac arrest when he was pulled from the creek. virginia state police will continue to investigate and find out how this terrible accident happened.

mike, back to you. >> thank you delia, delia goncalves live outside washington's hospital center this morning. well, a bizarre accident in bethesda leaves a contractor dead. montgomery county police say 66- year-old conception divalla was working at a home yesterday when the silverado started rolling into the street and it appears at this time that he got pinned when he tried to stop the truck from rolling into a stone wall. prosecutors revealed distressing details on the first day of george huguely's murder trial. he is accused of killing his ex- girlfriend, yeardley love in may of 2010. she was found dead. wednesday prosecutors told the jury it took love a couple of hours to die after huguely beat her during the fight. they also showed an e-mail huguely sent love two days before her death. it clinoided the -- included the phrase i should have killed you. in federal court in alexandria is man is expected

to plead guilty to posting online threats against the creators of the television show "south park." jesse curtis morton of new york changed his name after converting to islam. he was arrested in morocco last fall and another operator of the revolution muslim website has already been sentenced to 25 years in prison. former virginia governor and current candidate tim cane is breaking from president obama. the democrat is now criticizing some new white house rules which require some religious groups to provide coverage for contraceptives, cane is catholic. republicans and some democrats on the hill are fighting back now. they want the white house to allow an opt out clause for groups that say it violates their beliefs. among opponents speaking out, the roman catholic archdiocese of baltimore. >> this isn't something we can compromise on because it's fundamental to our teachings and you have to be consistent.

were all clear. >> sure did on 270. >> very few problems as far as roads go and we had a couple of spots. 2 inches up well north of us up near the pennsylvania border. today though looking at the bus stop forecast, we've got sunshine to tart the day and sunshine all day lodge. we're in the 20s in spots and we do have slick spots north and west and even inside the beltway some slick spots, any decks or sidewalks and maybe the driveway. watch out. there could be black ice on that. but seasonal averages are in the mid 40s, about 46 and that's what i'm going for for d.c. but there will be some spots even in the upper 40s as winds go northwest to westerly and relax a little bit by 4:00. 8 miles an hour and tonight at 8:00 p.m. 40 with a west wind less than 5. it's going to be a cold night tonight. back in the 20s and 30s. this morning we've got 24 in hagerstown. 32 culpeper and fredericksburg and you'll notice all of the temperatures even down to tappahannock, right around or below freezing. this is why we've got a lot of potential for slick spots over the next few hours.

lots of sunshine. 20s and 30s tonight. 50 tomorrow with some really light friday night showers into saturday as well. sunday about 32 but back in the 40s by monday. andrea? oh, i envy you right now. thank you howard. love is in the air as we get close to valentine's day and a wonderful aroma here in the 9 kitchen because we're preparing a romantic dinner. joining us is chef c. j. lefebvre from the cheesecake factory in fairfax and he's going to prepare for us chicken bellagio. >> the pounded chicken. it's chicken breast which is pounded. we're going to flour it with seasoned bread crumb and egg mix and place that on a flat stop skillet. this is a very easy dish to make at home and it looks wonderful. the bread crumbs? >> you can use whatever bread crumb, whatever works best for you. over here in our saute pans we're going to make sure we have pasta cooking. >> reporter: all right.

>> just about eight minutes to cook pasta al dente. >> any particular pasta? >> this is a thicker of a spaghetti. correct, we have the basil oil and a little butter and chicken broth that's thinning out and we have a parmesan cream sauce. going to take the pasta and add it straight to the basil oil. >> and get that going. >> just get this going and mix it up and make sure it's nice and hot. >> it looks pretty. >> it does. >> now i notice it's not just chicken and pasta but you have a little ham on this? >> there's prosciutto actually, which is like a little cured ham. take the pasta and place it right on the plate. just as a base. >> beautiful. >> you're going to take the chicken and put it right on top of the pasta. >> is valentine's day a big -- >> it is. >> holiday for cheesecake factory? >> it's a big couples day and night and it's great. we're looking forward to it. >> then up a cream -- you have
